Kookoo chicken was a welcome addition to the neighborhood, considering little Nyona at 86 st was the only Malaysian eatery in the area for a long time. Kookoo had rave reviews since its induction, and I must admit, their food is pretty good. The only negative is its space. It's relatively small and can only accommodate 6-8 parties at once. They only have one big round table in the back corner, so it's not the best place to have large gatherings. Since Covid, they added partition inside that enclosed each table in its own "room". This means there's less flexibility with the setup of the tables, and the wait times are longer. I highly recommend their roti canai and sarang burung. I don't recommend the Penang loh bak and the laksa noodles. But otherwise, everything else is nicely executed. My family really likes their fish head rice noodles. Even my family from HK gave this place a thumbs up when they visited!

Love their curry beef brisket. Best to pair with rice. Any leftover portion is going to taste even better for your next meal. Overall its flavor is slightly sweeter than I enjoy but still very good. Service is fast. Good value.

We went to dinner at this restaurant for a celebration Sunday evening. It was the 5 of us. We didn't make a reservation and only had to wait like 5-10 minutes for a table. We got seated at our table and the waiter brought out our drinking cups, plates and chopsticks in hot water. He placed them on the table and gave us menus. Here's what we ordered for appetizers: 1 - beef skewers plate - my in laws and son enjoyed them 1 - chicken skewers plate - I enjoyed the chicken ones. They make them well here. 2 - roti canai - this was my son's and husband's favorite appetizer 1 - mango and green papaya salad with shrimp - I really enjoyed this salad. The fish sauce that it was served with flavored the dish will. I would prefer this again and again. For entrees, we ordered: 1 - curry chicken over rice - it was good. 1- Hannian chicken (half) - good with the hot sauce 1 - Salted fish fried rice with chicken and shrimp - I was a bit disappointed. I couldn't get past the burnt taste. I think they burned the egg a bit and that's all I tasted. Otherwise, it was okay. The chicken and shrimp were good in it. 1 - Seafood scrambled egg with noodles - always good here 1 - Okra & Shrimp in Belacan Paste - so yum Overall, most of the food was good except the salted fish fried rice. I would definitely recommend all to check out this restaurant for family dinner, groups, etc. They do not take reservations. I'm looking forward to dining here again sometime.

A bit smaller portions even for takeout/pickup, but tasty and spicy. Their Pad Thai is way more spicy than a lot of the hipster non-authentic "Thai" places that tend to put too much sweet. Hainan chicken and rice is good, they tend to take out most bones and do give a good ratio of skin and meat. Prices of course went up like most places have, service is quick and friendly. Place is a bit small, no parking lot, but there is usually enough street parking.

My friend's family is from Malaysia and according to him, this is the best Malaysian food in NYC (and NYC has so much good Malay food). Since he told us that, I've been wanting to try and we finally got to go when I was back visiting. So much was so good, including the bah kuh teh, fish curry (I wish I remembered the whole dish name because my friend ordered), and the char keay teoh.

Didn't notice this restaurant all these years. Decided to go after someone recommended it to my mom. Impressed but there's areas of improvement. It's pretty small with only 5 tables. They have partitioning between each table, so less could fit. It seemed like there was only one man doing the server work but later on saw two women who just stood around on the side. Impressed that the man would rinse cups, plates, and utensils with hot water in front of you before setting the table. He also gave more than 1 napkin per person. The menu is quite neat too which is rare in the Chinese places around here. Small things that matter. I was only interested in having the Hainanese chicken rice. Parents ordered curry beef brisket and curry laksa Hainanese chicken. Hainanese chicken rice was better than expected. Their chicken is fresh and flavorful, but the meat could be more tender and skin can be more jelly. I don't get why Hainanese chickens here don't remove bones, but I don't like how they smash the bones and bone bits get all other the meat and in between my teeth. The rice might be the best chicken oil rice I've had in a while. It's flavorful with umami without making your mouth dry with strong aftertastes. They give a big portion of rice for all rice dishes. The soy sauce they use for the chicken isn't particularly thick and dark but tasted sweet like the type you add on cheung fun. They don't have ginger scallion paste here. Their chili sauce is not spicy at all, on the thinner side, bright and sweet. I paid extra to specify getting dark meat. The curry laksa Hainanese chicken had the same chicken as mine but without all the condiments. The rice noodle they give is the nicer type that's slipperier and smoother. Broth isn't anything special. Beef brisket was really stiff. Seems like my dad liked the curry tho since he ate all the rice.

Food was generally delicious. My favorite was the Hainanese Chicken and the water spinach. The curry chicken laksa I don't really recommend. I would def come back when I crave some Hainanese Chicken! Service was good, there were only one waiter at the time we were there and the restaurant was full but he was on top of everything! Food came out quick as well!

My office ordered from here for a week day lunch. I got the nasi lemak which was very nice. The sides were yummy and there was a good portion of rice to go with the items. I also got an order of the roti which came with a side of the curry. It comes with a lot of curry for the amount of roti that there is lol. The curry was nice and thick. It had a lot of melted starch from the potatoes but I actually enjoyed that. Chicken was tender as well. The roti itself was pretty thin and a nice compliment to the curry. All in all, a nice lunch option.
